The wicket-keeper batter Jamie Smith has recently expressed his desire to become a regular for his team and aims for his spot as a finisher in T20Is.
Smith recently made his T20I debut against India in the second game of the five-match series of the England tour of India where the visitors suffered defeat at M.A. Chidambaram Stadium.
Following his debut, Smith expressed his desire to play all three formats for his country and mentioned aiming to be an integral part of T20Is.
“I want to play all formats for England. That’s the main goal. I’m seeing these games (as) an opportunity I get to experiment and showcase my skills, I want to do that.”
“It would be nice to fix down a role so that everyone knows that you are going to be that number six batter in T20, it gives you a little bit more clarity to train and prepare with,” said Smith.
He also have said that having a fixed role in the test side has allowed him to perform to the bes of his abilities.
“I’ve got a very clear role in the Test side, keeping wicket and batting seven. That makes it much easier to prepare for. I feel confident I can go out and perform in any role that is thrown at me,” he added.
Smith made his test debut against West Indies in July 2024 at Lord’s where he scored a 70 runs and a 95 in the third test of the series.
Smith went on to score a hundred in the following test series against Sri Lanka and scored a 89 in thre third test against Pakistan. In nine tests, he has scored 637 runs at an average of 42.46 including a hundred.
Meanwhile, Smith has played seven ODIs but failed to create an impact in the 50-over format scoring only 133 runs at an average of 22.16. The wk-batter will be aiming to make an impact on the remaining matches of the T20I series against India.
India secured a 2-0 lead in the ongoing series with the third test to be played on January 28 at Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium.
